Artists from CES proudly display the stencils they used when creating Abuzz.

Abuzz is the culmination of a 12-week exploration of “the hive,” pollinators and creative art making. The investigation included field trips to – the public art site, Sage Living pollinator gardens, Pneuhaus’ Compound Camera, the WildWalls scavenger hunt and a wildflower seed give-away at the People’s Market in collaboration with Jackson Hole Public Art and High Mountain Pollinators and Bees.

The process-oriented drawings used various prompts including imaginative image making, observations of nature, photographs, cyanotype compositions and direct mark making. Participants’ favorite images appear on the Dr. Suess-inspired hive form.

CES artists created a sound response, Buzzing Bees, to the public artwork. Listen here.

This winning proposal accepted by Jackson Hole Public Art and the Center for the Arts to create a "hive" involved a collaboration with Community Entry Services. This artwork was the culmination of a 12 week exploration of pollinators and associated systems which help pollinators thrive. We took field trips to see pollinators in action, distributed wildflower seeds at the farmers market to encourage more habitat for pollinators, saw artwork related to the theme and made lots of drawings using various prompts including cyanotype, photo references, collage techniques, drawing from life, direct mark making. Selected drawings were stenciled onto the recycled banner material that wrapped the inner tubes. A good time was had by all.

This collaborative work sought to engage a group of underserved in the community with a compelling and large creative project. After the sculpture was installed, interested clients participated in the creation of the sound response, Buzzing Bees, which was recorded and accessible via a QR code at the site.
